Lusaka: An Unconventional Guide is a personal journey through Zambia’s capital city by Italian author and social worker Diego Cassinelli.
The journey begins with an unexpected encounter with an old Lusaka guidebook in Italy and eventually brings Diego to Zambia, where he meets Mr Mwanza, an experienced Zambian guide and storyteller.
Together, they travel around Lusaka in an old white Pajero known as the “Old Lady”, visiting places such as Soweto Market, Cairo Road, Kamwala, Chachacha Road, Freedom Way, Intercity and Bauleni.
Along the way, Diego discovers much more than streets and landmarks. He encounters traders, musicians, families, migrants and young people while learning about Lusaka’s history, culture, communities and everyday realities.
The book also explores Zambia’s colonial past, the development of Lusaka’s compounds and the experiences of people living in communities that are often viewed from the outside but rarely understood from within.
At its heart, Lusaka: An Unconventional Guide is about people and the stories behind a city.
It is a book for anyone who wants to see Lusaka from a different perspective, whether you live in the city, have visited Zambia before, or are discovering the country for the first time.
All proceeds from the book are donated to In&Out of the Ghetto, the organisation founded by Diego Cassinelli to support young people and grassroots development in marginalised communities.
